How Much Does a 200-Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in Los Angeles?

DB Electrical September 19, 2026

A 200-amp panel upgrade is priced after inspecting the existing service — see what's included, why costs vary, and when 200 amps is the right size for your Los Angeles home.

A 200-amp panel upgrade is not a one-price job. In Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, the final cost depends on more than the panel itself. The service size, condition of the existing equipment, location of the meter, utility requirements, grounding, permits, and access all matter.

The right way to price a panel upgrade is after looking at the existing system and determining what the home actually needs. A homeowner may only need a new main panel, while another property may need a new meter-main, service riser, underground service work, utility coordination, or repairs to bring the installation up to current code.

What is included in a proper 200-amp panel upgrade?

A complete upgrade typically includes removing the old panel, installing new 200-amp-rated equipment, properly labeling circuits, updating grounding and bonding where required, pulling the electrical permit, and arranging inspection.

Depending on the property, the work may also include:

  • A new meter-main or meter upgrade
  • New service entrance conductors
  • A new overhead mast or underground service connection
  • Ground rods and water-pipe bonding
  • Replacement of damaged or undersized breakers and conductors
  • Utility coordination with LADWP, Southern California Edison, or another serving utility
  • Space and capacity planning for a future EV charger, ADU, air-conditioning system, solar, or remodel

The goal is not simply to install a larger box on the wall. The entire service has to be sized and installed safely.

Why prices vary so much

The biggest difference is whether the existing service can support the new panel.

For example, if a home already has adequate service conductors, a usable meter location, and clear access, the project is more straightforward. If the meter and panel need to be relocated, the service is underground, the overhead point of attachment needs work, or the utility requires new equipment, the job becomes more involved.

Older Los Angeles homes can also have issues that are not visible until the equipment is opened. Common examples include deteriorated service conductors, outdated grounding, crowded panels, damaged meter equipment, or panels with no room for modern electrical loads.

That is why a panel upgrade should be inspected before a final quote is given.

Does a 200-amp upgrade require a permit?

Yes, a panel or service upgrade normally requires an electrical permit and inspection. The local jurisdiction must approve the installation, and the utility may need to disconnect and reconnect power or approve the meter equipment before energizing the new service.

A licensed electrical contractor should handle the permit process and coordinate the job correctly. Skipping permits can create problems during a home sale, insurance inspection, or future remodel—and more importantly, it can leave unsafe work hidden behind a panel cover.

Is 200 amps enough for my home?

For many homes, 200 amps is a good target. It can provide room for normal household loads plus future additions such as central air conditioning, an EV charger, electric appliances, or an ADU.

But the correct size is based on a load calculation, not a guess. Two homes with the same square footage can have very different electrical demand depending on their appliances, HVAC equipment, pool equipment, EV charging, and planned upgrades.

Before recommending a panel size, we look at the existing loads and the plans for the property.

Signs it may be time to upgrade your panel

You should have the system evaluated if you notice frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, a warm panel, corrosion, a fuse box, an outdated or recalled panel, or no available breaker space.

You may also need an upgrade before installing an EV charger, adding air conditioning, remodeling a kitchen, converting a garage, or building an ADU.
